Carol Ann Meteney
In Loving Memory
With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Carol Ann Meteney, a beloved wife, mother, and pillar of the Port Orchard, WA community. Carol left this world on November 17th after a life well-lived.
Carol was born on October 3rd, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, and became a woman of remarkable strength, kindness, and grace. She grew up in Southern California and graduated from Gardena High School. First married in her parent's home at the age of 18, Carol was a mother to four children and left behind Martin Alan (Candy-deceased) Larsen, Kurt Steven (Brad) Larsen, Karen Denise (Marty) Luis, and Leslie Collins Larsen. She was grandmother to eight and great-grandmother to eleven. Carol's love extended far beyond her immediate family, as she considered many others, both young and old, as cherished members of her family.
Carol wore many hats throughout her life, showcasing her incredible versatility and determination. She was a successful business owner, a skilled dental assistant, and a dedicated financial planner. Carol's journey as a Navy wife began in 1967 when she married Albert John Meteney. Together, they embarked on a military adventure, moving from Southern California to Norfolk, Virginia. They eventually returned to California, where Al retired from Mare Island after 26 years of distinguished Naval service, rising from an enlisted man to a Chief Warrant Officer 2. Later, she met and embraced her husband’s son, Albert Jr. (Joelle) Meteney, and they remained caring and connected until her passing.
Moving to the community of Port Orchard from California in 1992, Carol and Al quickly became an integral part, forming lasting friendships that would withstand the test of time. Al was active in the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). Carol was involved and president of the Retired Officer Wives Club (ROWA); soon after, they joined the Navy league. The untimely loss of Al in 2005 did not deter Carol's commitment to service. She remained actively engaged in the Navy League and MOAA.
Carol served two terms as the local chapter president of the Navy League, leaving an indelible mark on the organization. She continued contributing her time and expertise as a National Director for the Navy League of the United States. In 2005, the Department of Navy, via the Secretary of the Navy, awarded her a Meritorious Public Service Award for outstanding service and support of the Department of the Navy and the men and women of the Sea Services and their families in the Bremerton Puget Sound area from October 2003 to May 2005.
Carol's dedication extended to the Kitsap Chapter of MOAA, where she served as President and Past President. Her leadership and passion for community service were unwavering. Carol loved entertaining and was renowned for her culinary skills. Her love for camping, fishing, boating, and water sports brought joy to her life and those around her.
Carol was instrumental in placing the Lone Sailor statue on the Bremerton pier, where people riding the ferry to and from Seattle can catch a glimpse. The Lone Sailor statue is the iconic symbol representing the United States Navy memorial's mission to honor, recognize, and celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services past, present, and future and inform the public about their service.
A woman ahead of her time, Carol was a savvy technology user, embracing the ever-changing world enthusiastically. She had a knack for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, transforming a simple cottage cheese container into a charming planter. Carol had an eye for beauty, collecting driftwood and dried flowers that adorned her surroundings.
Carol Ann Meteney will be remembered for her warm spirit, generous heart, and commitment to positively impacting the lives of those around her. She leaves a legacy of love, service, and the enduring bonds she created with family and friends.
Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in memory of Carol to either the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, where your donation will support families experiencing financial difficulties due to deployments, family emergencies, and other hardships of military life, or the United States Navy Memorial, in support of its mission to Honor, Recognize and Celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services, past, present, and future; and Inform the public about their service.
A memorial service to celebrate Carol's life will be held in Spring 2024. Look for announcements via the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council Navy League of the US. All friends, family, and community members whose lives were touched by Carol will be/are invited to commemorate a well-lived life.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
