Freddie Leyba

Fred (Freddie) Leyba passed away on November 9, 2024 at his home in Seattle, Washington. He was born on March 28, 1960 in Murray, Utah and was the youngest of seven children.

Freddie is preceded in death by his parents, Federico and Ermelinda Leyba, his sister, Christine Christiansen, his brother, Stephen Leyba, and nephew James Leyba. He is survived by his sisters Darlene (Joe) Alfieri, Rosie Leyba, Edna (Leonard) Candelaria, and MaryLou Leyba. Affectionately known as “Tio”, Freddie had many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, and he will be missed deeply.

Freddie grew up in West Jordan, Utah and attended Utah Technical College after graduating from Bingham High School in 1978. It was around this time that he also developed a passion for photography before taking a job as a traveling photographer for Kmart. His job took him to small towns and cities throughout Utah and New Mexico, taking family photographs at various store locations, (likely including some of your own).

Eventually, he decided to leave Utah and settled down in Seattle, where he spent 23 years working for the State of Washington, Department of Labor and Industries (LNI) as a Safety Consultation Supervisor.

Though he rarely shared about his own family, he would often check in with his colleagues about theirs. He was a private and humble man who cared deeply about his family, friends, and colleagues.

The family would like to thank Freddie’s friends and colleagues at LNI for the kindness and support that they have shown our family during this difficult time. We would like to offer a special thanks to his supervisor Minh, Crystal, and Pamela.

A private service will be held in Freddie's honor in Utah at a later date.
